The images of yesterday, creating the connections of today.
Visiting my grandmothers
house, as a child, I remember the velvet covered album. The babies and
children in clothes from long ago, the nameless faces of the men and women,
gazing at the camera, their images captured over 100 years ago. These
names and faces took on a life of their own, or perhaps their lives were
reclaimed as I began the genealogy research, looking for my history and
my connections with the past.
As I looked at their images
with a new perspective, I wondered what was involved in creating these
images, getting family to town, and how to get the babies and toddlers
to sit still for the photographers, and the long exposures of the cameras.
These are some of the same issues we face today. I realize it was just
as important in their lives, this photographic documentation of their
milestones and histories.
